With prices starting at 1,035,000Kč plus additional costs, the fourth-generation Skoda Superb is offered in saloon and Combi body styles, proving that this range is not down without a proper fight with its ever-diminishing race of executive saloons.

Beginning with the design, the all-new Superb dons the current signature Skoda face first debuted in the Scala while being the first production Skoda to don the updated SKODA lettering. The first of the new chapter for this Czech carmaker in this age of new normal, as they said. While the taillights look like it was stolen from Maserati's dustbin, the conservative styling remains in the new model, be it saloon or Combi. Although the new model is longer than the old one, it's got less width, height, and wheelbase compared to it, probably for parking issues.

The interior has been revamped for the new model and because Skoda is part of the Volkswagen round table, you can expect the hopeless haptic touch panels at the steering wheel as well as the 13-inch touchscreen that controls infotainment, navigation, and smartphone connectivity, climate control, the CANTON audio system with thirteen speakers, heated and ventilated seats with massage function, easy entry function, and ambient lighting, among others. Spacing aside, the new model is still as comfortable as the previous Mk3 model despite the lesser wheelbase, and with the Combi variant, you can store up to 690 liters of boot space with the rear seats present. 1920 with the rear seats folded down. That's 30 liters less than the previous Superb Combi. What a whammy.

At launch, the Superb is powered by a 2.0L TDi diesel engine which produces 150ps of power and 360Nm of torque. Mated to a 7-speed AT, it does 0-100kph in 9.3 seconds and flat-out at 222kph. Fuel economy is around 5.0L/100km and CO2 emissions at 130g/km. It will be joined by petrol-powered versions later on with the most powerful version using the 2.0 TSi engine with 265ps of power output.

Despite its questionable dimensions, the all-new Superb still drives like a luxury car, which is a fitting point for Skoda's flagship. Coupled with the new DCC Plus adaptive suspension with two independently controlled valves, faster damping adjustment, and a wide range of damping characteristics, it feels so alive on the road. Add 4x4 to the mix and it keeps on going even when wet, making it a cut-price Audi A4 if you catch my drift.

The Skoda Superb Mk4 features the latest assistance systems with new ones such as turn assist and anti-collision assist. Other systems carried over from the previous model such as assisted driving, lane change assistant, and Front Assist were updated.

Although it's now shorter compared to its predecessor, the fourth-generation Skoda Superb is proof that it's still standing in the face of the ever-diminishing race of executive saloons. Thank your Skoda overloads that they still made a saloon like this as well as the Octavia.

Just like the previous version, the W214 E-Class is offered in three different body styles such as the sedan, the estate, and the outdoor-oriented All-Terrain with slightly increased ground clearance. Whichever E-Class you're on, you will still be greeted by the new design that looks like it's been borrowed from its sedan relatives, the C-Class and the S-Class. Not bad for a middle child of the family tree. Although it's hard to distinguish between the three, the sizing makes it easy to differentiate it from its relatives because, as I said, this is the middle child of the Mercedes sedan range and it deserves extreme attention to detail at first contact.

Unlike its C-Class and S-Class brothers, the new interior prefers the dashboard layout inspired by the Mercedes-EQ range and with the rather controversial Superscreen equipped, it now behaves just like its EQ relatives because with two touchscreens on the dashboard, it's the ideal time-waster for those who love to play around the car's insides. Care for some Netflix and chill while stuck in traffic, I presume?

While the added Superscreen is deemed too flashy for speedo boys behind the wheel, the passenger side is classic E-Class comfort, and with the added Energizing Comfort wellness program, Energizing Coach program, and Thermotronic climate control with Digital Vent Control, the out-on-a-limo feeling truly hits the W214's sweet spot.

The W214 E-Class, depending on which body style you're on, offers a wide range of petrol (E200), diesel (E220d), and PHEV configurations (E300e and E400e). All are mated to a 9G-TRONIC gearbox.

The cheapest version, the E200 Avantgarde Advanced, features a 2.0L turbo engine with mild hybrid, producing 204PS of power and 320Nm of torque with a fuel economy of 6.4L/100km. The most powerful version for the time being is the E400e with the 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system, where the said engine is bolted to an electric motor and a 25.4kWh lithium battery, capable of producing 381PS of total power output, 650Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 5.3 seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 250kph.

To make the E-Class W214 capable of driving like every E-Class should, it has a front four-arm suspension, rear five-link suspension, and Agility Control steel-sprung for MHEV vehicles, but to get the most out of it, it comes with the available Airmatic air suspension with ADS+ continuously variable damping and rear-axle steering setup. Such setup will bring dynamism to the all-new E-Class and looks like high-rollers can't wait to get their hands on it.

Because this is the E-Class for the new normal, the W214 features a wide range of ADAS such as Active Distance Assist, Attention Assist, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking Package with reverse camera, Speed Limit Assist, Attention Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, and the available Driving Assistance Plus with Active Steering Assist that vibrates the steering wheel when lane markings are no longer clearly visible and Active Steering Assist is no longer available.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class W214 is the most advanced E-Class to date thanks to its dramatic improvements inside and out. It really is the E-Class for the new normal and like it or not, it's prepared for almost everything life throws at it.

Subaru Levorg (VN5) Layback

With crossovers selling like Hollywood superheroes in movies and TV, the second-generation Subaru Levorg's not safe from the craze either because it now spawned a crossover version called the Layback, the just-sized alternative for those who think the Outback's too big for them.

The Layback, a crossover derivative of the second-generation Levorg estate, is so weirdly named, it looks like it's made for those who are off for this weekend's swim meet because the name rhymes with a particular kind of speedo that swimmers wear during a swim meet.

While the styling is broadly similar to the current Levorg, the swimmer-friendly Layback features a different front view that differentiates it from the normal Levorg as well as the black claddings underneath and added ground clearance to give it a rugged feeling to this sport utility wagon. As for the inside, it still packs the Tesla-esque dashboard, 12.3-inch instrumental cluster, harman/kardon audio system, and seating for five with up to 561 liters of boot space, a hidden compartment, and a hands-free power liftgate, but the Layback is offered with a black-and-ash two-tone upholstery that matches the Layback's outdoor vibes.

While running on the Subaru Global Platform, the Layback feels more like a flyback rather than a racing back even with the SI-DRIVE set to Sport Mode. Still, with the signature Subaru Symmetrical AWD standard, the Layback's prepared to swim with the fishes, metaphorically speaking, from topless to bikini bottom.

Under the hood, the Layback's CB18 1.8L DOHC DIT engine produces 177PS of power and 300Nm of torque. Mated with a Lineartronic CVT, it promises a combined 13.6km/l based on WLTP standards.

With safety the true gold standard for Subaru, the Layback's armed with the latest Eyesight advanced driver-assist technology with Pre-Collision Braking, Autonomous Emergency Steering, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering Function, and Lane Departure Prevention. It even comes with Subaru Starlink which allows the driver to access numerous services such as SOS Emergency Assistance, Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification, Maintenance Notifications, Monthly Vehicle Health Report and Diagnostic Alerts, Stolen Vehicle Recovery Service, Vehicle Security Alarm Notification, Remote Lock/Unlock, Remote Horn and Lights and Remote Vehicle Locator.

The Layback starts at 3,993,000 Japanese Yen plus additional costs, which is cheaper to own than its big brother, the Legacy Outback. So, there you have it. If you're looking for a crossover wagon made by Subaru but the Outback's too big for you, consider the swimmer-friendly Layback your suitable option. Although weirdly named, the Layback's ready to make a splash, and you'd better get your swimming goggles and swim caps on because this Layback's got your flybacks.

Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance (W206)

The all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 range, which is based on the W206 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, signals the beginning of the era of the subtler AMG machines because the newest AMG machines are no longer the monster machines of the past because, being built for the new normal, they have sacrificed its monstrous selves for the sake of subtler, more powerful forms. In short, they're no longer as loud as they used to be.

Starting at an estimated 115K Euros plus additional costs, the all-new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance, in sedan and estate forms, is no longer the C63 the world remembers because despite being a W206 C-Class on steroids, what's underneath is not what you call a treat because we live in the new normal and for this new model, electrification is a sin the new model has committed.

Although it looks similar to its lesser brother, the C43, with some minor alternations to its detailing to differentiate it from the lesser one, as well as the same C-Class interior that can be fitted with optional Performance Seats, the C63 S E Performance's powertrain is not a pleasant sight for speedo boys behind the wheel because, under the hood, the previous model's V8 engine has been thrown away sadly and replaced by the same 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as the A45 but it's been added with the new electric drive unit, AMG High-Performance Battery, belt-driven starter-alternator, and electric exhaust-gas turbocharger, creating a P3 Hybrid layout that produces 680PS of power output and 1,020Nm of torque, more than the previous model it replaces.

Mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G, the super saloon gone commando has a 0-100kph time of 3.4 seconds and with an optional extra, 280kph flat-out. 270kph if you're in the estate version.

Although the P3 Hybrid powertrain is deemed controversial for AMG fanatics, the C63 S E Performance drives like a sports car as expected. By playing around with the AMG Dynamic Select system with seven driving modes and a customizable Individual mode, you can experiment with various ways and means to get yourself addicted to this car. Running on Electric mode, it's good for up to 125kph of top speed while the Battery Hold mode keeps the battery state of charge constant. 

Plunging into Race mode, the C63 S E Performance is ready to unleash mayhem on the track. Taking advantage of its AMG Ride Control steel-spring suspension with Adaptive Damping System, three-stage variable steering, rear axle steering, ESP, and its AMG high-performance composite brake system, this 4WD executive car on steroids can dance despite the bulk of its PHEV powertrain. Although less noisy than its V8-powered predecessor, it can surely make a mess out of it.

While the PHEV powertrain is an absolute turn-off compared to the old V8-powered model, the all-new C63 S E Performance is like an upper-class sewer rodent pampered with style. Despite its quiet behavior, it can surely be an aggressive schizophrenic when the opportunity arises. The world's getting jealous about this high-performance PHEV super saloon right about now because, with such power despite its controversial powertrain, you can really kiss your ugly-looking BMW M3 goodbye.

BMW M3 Competition Touring

For decades, the idea of an M3 Touring is nothing but a far-fetched dream until now, the dream of an M3 Touring became a living reality, and looks like the first-ever M3 Touring will have the Audi RS4 Avant in its crosshairs.

Priced at 97,800 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever BMW M3 Competition Touring is a dream come true for speedo boys wishing for an estate version of the M3. Because this is an M3, there are some ups and downs with this dream-turned-reality.

Because the M3 Competition Touring is basically a G21 3-Series Touring with the face of the G80 M3, you can expect lots of complaints from the design department because of the controversial kidney grilles that became the new normal for BMW but because this is the M3 Touring, they'll let it slide for now.

On the interior, it still operates and feels just like their normal equivalents, apart from the annoying but clever BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that works like your Amazon Alexa device as well as the M-specific treatments that differentiate them such as its sports seats, buttons, and some extras. Because this is the Touring variant, you can expect 500 liters of boot space with the rear seats present and up to 1510 liters of boot space with the rear seats folded down, meaning this M3 is ready for everything.

Under the hood, the M3 Competition Touring is powered by the same 3.0L twin-turbo six-cylinder engine as its siblings, and because this is set in Competition spec with xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the only gearbox you'll get is an 8-speed automatic. It produces 510PS of power, 650Nm of torque, a 0-100kph time of 3.6 seconds, and an electronically-limited top speed of 250kph. 280kph with the optional extra on, which is 10kph less than its sedan equivalent.

Despite being heavier than the sedan version, the M3 Competition Touring still packs a punch with its M-tuned dynamics, adaptive dampers, variable-ratio steering, and others. With such track-tuned dynamics, it's no wonder it became the fastest wagon to lap the Nurburgring in 7 minutes 35.06 seconds.

With the dream of the M3 Touring becoming a living reality, it's time to get egoistic about it because love it or hate it, this is the high-performance station wagon Bimmer fanatics want...or not.

Mercedes-AMG C43 (W206)

The Mercedes-AMG C43 is what happens when you put the W206 C-Class to Normal Mode, making this S4 rival the well-balanced sports car built for daily use, whether going to work or for a little Sunday Cup at a nearby track.

With prices starting at around 71,460 Euros plus additional costs, the Mercedes-AMG C43 is offered in sedan and estate versions, and no matter which body style you choose, you are greeted with the C43's eclectic mix of performance and efficiency, attributes that are broadly similar to its W205 predecessor.

While the exterior design is broadly similar to your typical W206 C-Class, this Normal Mode difficulty setting features AMG treatments from top to bottom, giving the W206 C43 a sporty character fit for daily use. On the interior, it works just like the C-Class, meaning you still have the  Tesla-like large touch screen, the rather annoying MBUX user interface including the Alexa-ish "Hey Mercedes" voice function, and others. 

In the C43, it's packed with AMG Performance seats, an AMG Performance steering wheel, and the additional AMG TRACK RACE lap time, giving the interior the impression of an athlete going to work in a suit and tie while wearing a basketball jersey on the inside, getting ready for another game after work.

Under the hood, the previous C43's 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine was replaced by a smaller 2.0L 4-cylinder engine featuring the world's first electric exhaust gas turbocharger. Inspired by AMG's F1 involvement, this new electrified and compact engine produces 422PS of power and 500Nm of torque. Mated to a 9G-TRONIC gearbox and AMG Performance 4MATIC, it does 0-100kph in 4.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.

Because the 4MATIC AWD system features a rear-biased torque distribution with adaptive damping and rear-axle steering, it feels well-balanced to drive even during track days at the Hockenheimring. Although the struggle is real, it feels just right full-stop. Mind you, this is the C-Class that has its difficulty setting to Normal, meaning it has a mix of comfort and challenge behind the wheel, even while fiddling with the three-stage ESP and AMG DYNAMIC SELECT.

Call it challenging or comfortable because, in the end, the new Mercedes-AMG C43 is the ideal balance drivers can't get enough of.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain (S206)

The first-ever Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain adds some crossover character to the good-looking C-Class Estate, making it the good-looking alternative to the GLC crossover that outsold it ten-fold. So, what's it all about the first-ever C-AT?

Priced at 54,681 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain is made for those who think the GLC is obese and the Audi A4 allroad is too boring for them. Instead, they want a sport utility wagon that is worthy to be the ideal weekend warrior for all kinds of activities after a strenuous week of work. After all, it's a can-do-all crossover estate fit for a businessman in a hiking outfit.

While this is essentially based on today's C-Class Estate, the All-Terrain variant features increased ground clearance, wheel arch claddings, specially-designed bumpers, and simulated underbody protection, making it robust and equipped for almost everywhere, even while going on a beach for a little R&R. 

As for the interior, it works just like a normal C-Class. It features a Tesla-like large touch screen, the rather annoying MBUX user interface including the Alexa-ish "Hey Mercedes" voice function, and a similar spacing from the estate variant it was based on. It truly fits all walks of life in this age of the new normal.

There are two available engine choices for the C-Class All-Terrain such as the 1.5L turbocharged engine and the 2.0L common rail diesel engine. Both of them are packed with mild hybrid technology and are mated to a 9G-TRONIC automatic gearbox.

With 4MATIC the only layout offered in the C-AT, this crossover estate is capable of tackling almost any road conditions, be it tarmac, gravel, or snow. Not as precise as an Audi A4 allroad but it's worth fun driving it.

Like most variants, the C-Class All-Terrian is obviously packed with safety features such as intelligent parking systems, driving assistance systems, DIGITAL LIGHT, and other high-tech safety features. Although not friendly for speedo boys behind the wheel, the things that made the C-Class All-Terrain safe is what truly matter in this age of the new normal.

With the arrival of the first-ever All-Terrain variant, looks like the latest-generation C-Class is now packed with choices and for adventurous businesspeople, this could be their best bet.

MG5 EV (2023 minor change)

The MG5 EV was revised as Britain's reasonably priced electric estate's gone premium and being premium is a good thing...almost.

Priced at 31,690 Euros plus additional costs, which is drastically more than its pre-facelift, the new MG5 EV's big minor change delivers a bold new approach to one of the most reasonably priced EVs on the market. Beginning with the exterior design, the big minor change features a sleeker front view reminiscent of a certain Kia not available in its home market. I can't say what model due to search query reasons but you get the point. On the back, meanwhile, the rear lamps have been revised while it sports a new rear bumper. With such an exterior design, it doesn't look like a cheap car anymore. Nice one, MG.

On the interior, the Volkswagen-esque dashboard was revised and it now features a new and longer touch screen that now takes control of every single nook and cranny. Don't worry though, you can see buttons below the touch screen that controls the aircon and volume controls within reach. Like the old MG5, it accommodates up to five people but the rear space can accommodate up to 89 liters less than the old model with the rear seats folded down, pre-facelift's 1456L vs. facelift's 1367L. What a whammy for space-conscious people who are spending their weekends doing garage sale trips.

The MG5 EV big minor change is now offered only with the 61kWh Long Range electric powertrain. It produces 156PS of power and 280Nm of torque, which is more than the old model, a 0-60mph time in around eight seconds, and 115mph of top speed, which is pretty much the same as the old one but still slightly faster than a normal Japanese car as expected. The driving range is good for around 250 miles based on WLTP standards while charging times can take about 40 minutes to reach 80% on a public charging station or six hours and 30 minutes at home.

As expected, the new MG5 EV features a wide array of safety features such as Active Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Bicycle Detection, Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Warning System, and Traffic Jam Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Intelligent High Beam Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

While the shortened boot space and the drastic price hike are the main Achilles' Heel, the new MG5 EV is taking shape with its reworked design, tech, and improved driving range that will keep on going until the last charge.

Genesis G70 Shooting Brake

The Genesis G70 served as Korea's 3-Series fighter that tries hard to upset the established competition with its unique performance, styling, comfort, and technology. For the first time in Genesis history, the G70 spawned a five-door Shooting Brake variant for those who need more room in the back for more while offering the same driving experience as the sedan.

Although it was originally meant to be exclusive to the European market, it seems the Koreans wanted a shooting brake version of the G70 and looks like they're in luck because they can now buy one at the starting price of 43,900,000 Korean Won plus additional costs.

At first glance, it looks and feels like normal G70 judging from the signature Genesis design, the minimalist interior design, and seating for five people, but because this is the Shooting Brake, the hatchback proportions gave this G70 more space than the sedan version, meaning you can expect up to 465-litres of boot space with the rear seats present and up to 1,535-litres with the rear seats folded down. The added boot space means business and business is good for the G70 Shooting Brake.

Unlike the sedan version, the G70 Shooting Brake is offered only with the 2.0L Turbo GDi engine with 252PS of power output while mated to an 8-speed AT. Fuel economy is a combined 10.4km/L for FR variants and 9.7km/L for 4WD variants.

In terms of handling, the Shooting Brake behaves just like the sedan version, which is a good thing full-stop. With its front MacPherson struts, rear multilink suspension, electronically controlled adaptive dampers, Electronic Power Assisted Steering, and a mechanical LSD, the G70 Shooting Brake delivers dynamics reminiscent of European imports. Although it was meant to be driven on European roads, driving one from the streets of Seoul to the corners of Inje Speedium wasn't half bad at all. Above all, it's Korean through and through and it loves to be taken dramatically.

Like the sedan version, the G70 Shooting Brake puts safety as its top priority with its array of ADAS technology such as Smart Cruise Control, Highway Driving Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and more.

Despite being offered with only one engine, the G70 Shooting Brake delivers the same driving experience as the sedan version but with the added rear space for everyday situations. Europeans got their taste of it and now, the Koreans are ready to have a go with it, unless they have to think twice about which G70 they should drive.

Opel/Vauxhall Astra L Sports Tourer

The all-new Astra may be more of a Germanized version of the new Peugeot 308 with a squarish front face that looks abstract and pixelated but it's shaping up to be a proper European hatchback for the masses. With the arrival of the Sports Tourer variant, you can get the same treatment as expected in the hatchback equivalent but with the bigger boot for your everyday needs.

With prices starting at 27,750 Euros or 25,515 Pounds plus additional costs, the Sports Tourer variant of the all-new Opel/Vauxhall Astra L delivers the same stuff from its hatchback equivalent but with the added boot space for your bare necessities.

Like its hatchback equivalent, the Astra L Sports Tourer dons the Vizor front face first seen in the second-generation Mokka crossover, giving the new model some cyberpunk looks, which is rather impressive but its squarish looks made the new Astra feel as abstract as a fancy abstract painting you saw in the art gallery. Inside, the all-new Astra comes with a footlong-sized monitor with two screens on it, one for the speedo and the other one for the touch-screen sat-nav with smartphone connectivity on it.

Although roomier than the previous model, the Sports Tourer has 608 liters of boot space with the rear seats present and up to 1634 liters with the rear seats folded down, similar to its Peugeot 308 SW equivalent.

The Sports Tourer carries the same powertrain choices as its hatchback equivalent ranging from a 1.2L turbo petrol, 1.5 diesel, and the range-topping 1.6L turbo-hybrid powerplant similar to the one used on the new Peugeot 308 SW. The latter produces a high-performance 180PS of power output, 360Nm of torque output, and because it's mated to an 8-speed automatic, it does 0-100kph in 7.7 seconds and flat-out in 225kph.

Citroen C5 X

Citroen revived the C5 moniker in the form of a sport utility wagon known as the C5 X. Billed as the decent rival to the Subaru Legacy Outback, the first-ever Citroen C5 X continues the carmaker's tradition of delivering the most comfortable ride for French motorists in a new and questionable way to spend your everyday life working and traveling in the middle of your day off. Let's fire it up.

Priced at 32,900 Euros plus additional costs, which makes it cheaper to own than the Subaru Outback, the first-ever Citroen C5 X is made for a typical European motorist who would like a sport utility wagon that caters to the driver's whims of life. Whether it's for a typical work schedule or for a quiet Sunday drive, the C5 X is built for almost everything.

In typical French car standards, the styling of the C5 X can be downright questionable judging by its high ground clearance, a sloping roofline, and the modern Citroen front face that looks cross-eyed like a Kabuki. Talk whatever you want but this is what the French called the "new normal" because that's how French cars look like these days.

Inside, the C5 X's dashboard can be highly mistaken for a BMW because of the similar layout. Despite having a long touchscreen that controls the navigation, media, and smartphone connectivity, there are buttons and switches that control the volume and air conditioning, which is pretty nice for a Citroen. As for the passenger space, meanwhile, despite being shorter and less spacious compared to the Outback, the boot space is roomier than the old C5 Tourer from several decades ago even with the rear seats present. Good or bad, it doesn't matter for the C5 X anyway.

Performance-wise, the C5 X features a choice of PureTech petrol and Hybrid powertrains mated exclusively with an 8-speed AT. The latter is basically a PHEV where the 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is connected to an electric motor and a Li-ion battery, generating up to 225PS of power and 360Nm of torque. It does 0-100kph in 7.9 seconds and has a 233kph top speed, meaning you can kiss your Outback goodbye. As for the fuel economy, meanwhile, it's a rather impressive 1.3L/100km combined.

Because Citroen is well-known for creating the most comfortable vehicles ever driven since the 2CV, the C5 X features the Citroen Advanced Comfort suspension, which makes it capable of handling through bumpy roads without spilling a cup of coffee. The comfortable driving goes a lot further in PHEV variants, making the journey as smooth as sitting on memory foam.

While basking through the C5 X's impressive comfort on the road, the most advanced safety features are in play, making motorists notice while on the go courtesy of its Highway Driver Assist that grants the C5 X level 2 driving, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Top 360 Vision Surround View Camera, and more.

Peugeot 308 III SW

The third-generation Peugeot 308 truly is the start of the new era of Peugeot, apart from being the first to proudly wear the new Peugeot logo. Although not suitable for speedo boys because Stellantis says no to a hot version of this new model, it has the credentials normal drivers need to get through the new normal in style and dynamics. With the arrival of the SW variant, you can get the same treatment as expected in the hatchback equivalent but with the bigger boot for your everyday needs.


Priced at 26,450 Euros plus additional costs, the SW variant of the all-new, third-generation Peugeot 308 delivers the same stuff from its hatchback equivalent but with the added boot space for your bare necessities.

Like the hatchback, the new 308 SW has an aggressor feel than the previous model's generic approach while the interior carries the newly-improved i-Cockpit with the first-ever Peugeot i-Connect that comes with the rather annoying voice control, not to mention the comfortable passenger seats that feel beyond the mainstream. But with the SW, you'll get 608 liters of boot space with the rear seats present and up to 1634 liters with the rear seats folded down, giving you plenty of opportunities to take advantage of its added space for business and leisure.

The SW carries the same powertrain choices as its hatchback equivalent ranging from a 1.2L PureTech, 1.5 Blue HDi, and a 1.6 HYBRID variant, all mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The most powerful version is the 1.6 HYBRID variant, which is basically a plug-in hybrid with the turbocharged 1.6L petrol engine connected to an 81kW electric motor. It produces a system power output of 225PS of power, has a 0-100kph of 7.5 seconds, a top speed of 235kph. The HYBRID 180 variant is the most efficient because of its 1.1L/100km combined fuel economy based on WLTP standards. Time to ditch your Corolla Touring for this one, ladies and gentlemen.

Dynamics-wise, it is part comfortable, part sporty at the same time thanks to its reworked suspension setup and the Driving Style Selector. As for safety, you can still expect a wide array of driving tech such as Semi-automatic lane change, anticipated speed recommendation, curve speed adaptation, long-range blind-spot monitoring, RCTA, Peugeot Open & Go, E-call+ emergency call, and more, standard or with the Drive Assist pack.

Not the best wagon ever made but it's a must-buy for those who are bored with crossovers.

Volkswagen Golf VIII R Variant

The Golf VIII R is the ultimate expression of the current-generation Golf that combines raw power and all-wheel-drive capability, creating the all-around Golf that can take on all comers. It also comes with a rear differential and joy of joys, torque vectoring that allows most to be transferred to the rear wheels. With such balance, the new Golf R delivers a more addictive driving experience for the drivers even when taken on either gravel or snow when needed. And it's driftable so you can send it sideways when you want.

Subaru Legacy Outback BT5

The all-new Subaru Legacy Outback sport utility wagon has arrived and it promises to be the safest and proficient Outback ever made while being suited for the new normal.

Priced at 4,147,000 Japanese Yen (around $42,000) plus additional costs, the all-new Subaru Legacy Outback is prepped to take on the new normal with its new platform, interior, design, dynamics, and tech while retaining the legendary Legacy spirit inherited from its predecessors. It's odd why the Outback is the only model offered in the seventh-generation Legacy but whatever the reason, this is what the new normal feels like.

Beginning with the design, the Legacy Outback BT5 is almost identical to its predecessor not to mention the fact that it's bigger as well despite the shorter tread. It's 50mm longer, 35mm wider, and has 13mm more ground clearance compared to the previous model. Although the sizing is worth the struggle on Japanese roads, it's a wise call for Subaru not to get rid of it and instead regenerate it for its new outing because if that happened, the Subarists of Japan would be agitated.

What about the interior? The new Outback features numerous tech-savvy features inside just like from the second-generation Levorg including the towering 11.6-inch touchscreen that works like Tesla's but with the added buttons for the radio and touch panels on the climate control to make it handy for all. There's also the new 12.3-inch instrumental panel that works just like the Audi virtual cockpit as well and the new harman/kardon sound system for a premium sound feel like no other.

On the comfort side, the new model is shorter than the previous model but it's slightly bigger and it's still roomier compared to its predecessor. It still fits up to five people and the rear seats can be folded down for your luggage needs. For added convenience, the new Legacy Outback comes with the Hands-Free Power Gate that allows the rear door to be opened automatically by waving in front of the Subaru emblem. Nothing says wiser than the added conveniences this new model offers not to mention the waterproof seats on the X-BREAK variant made of polyurethane instead of fabric and the new pop-up tonneau cover on the back.

Under the hood, the predecessor's 2.5L boxer-four petrol engine has been thrown away and in its place, the new Outback is powered by the CB18 1.8L DOHC DIT engine first seen on the second-generation Levorg. It produces two more PS than the previous model and 65Nm more torque as well. Mated to a LINEARTRONIC CVT with 8-speed manual mode, the fuel economy is a modest 13kmpl based on WLTC Mode standards.

Running on the Subaru Global Platform, the new Outback is now stiffer than the previous model, making it capable of passing through rigorous crash tests. Because of that, it is bulkier than the previous model, making it less enjoyable to drive on the bends of Nikko even while setting the SI-DRIVE mode to S# Mode, the sportiest setting of the three, but while enjoying another day of dirt in Hokkaido, the Outback enjoys roughhousing thanks to Subaru's legendary Symmetrical AWD and the X-MODE feature. 

In the cheaper X-BREAK variant, you have two modes at your dispersal; one that can tackle snow and dirt while the other that can tackle deep snow and mud. Either way, they're both handy during your lunchtime with Hannibal.

Because safety is part of the new normal, the new Outback features Eyesight X, which features a wide array of highly advanced safety features such as traffic jam assist, active speed control, and active lane change assist, in addition to its pre-crash brake, unintentional acceleration suppression, active cruise control, and lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive high beam, and driver monitoring system.

In addition, the new Outback comes with a bizarre driver monitoring system that detects drivers' heads in case of distractions and drowsiness as well as SRS Seat Cushion airbags, the frontal pedestrian airbag, a first for the Outback, the new Post Collision Brake Control, and the new Rear View Camera Washer.

So, what can you say about the new Legacy Outback? Although it's bulkier and less enjoyable to drive than the previous model, not to mention the widebody size that is a risky struggle on Japanese roads, it's still a capable crossover with numerous conveniences fit for the new normal. Either way, it's here to stay.

Peugeot 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered

The formation of the new Peugeot SPORT marque gave birth to the ultimate 508 ever created, the 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED. With its sport-tuned dynamics, PHEV powertrain, and aggressive styling, this is what the 508 has been missing the whole time.

With prices starting at 67,100 Euros plus additional costs, the first-ever 508 PSE is more costly to own than the Volkswagen Arteon R, but on the upside, it's cheaper to own than the BMW M3, making this the bargain high-performance saloon of the year, but it's not really a bargain high-performance car because, as I said, it's more expensive than the hot Arteon I've mentioned a few seconds ago.

Anyway, the styling. At first glance, it looks just like the normal, second-generation, Peugeot 508, in sedan and SW variants, but the PSE variant gave both of these body styles some juice. It features a dark front grille, yellow-green accented signature front bumper, yellow-green brake calipers similar to the Subaru WRX STi, new rear bumpers, and dark-colored 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to match its personality. With its dark-themed styling, the 508 PSE is what happens when a businessman's car has gone after hours.

The interior works and feels just like the normal 508 and the i-Cockpit still works as every new Peugeot should. It's still as spacious as the normal 508, of course, and with the SW variant, it can carry loads of stuff whether for business or for pleasure.

The highlight of the 508 PSE is its performance and this is the kind of performance Asian medium-sized cars should learn from them. Powered by a 1.6L turbocharged engine connected to two electric motors and mated to an e-EAT8 gearbox, it generates a total power output of 360PS of power and 520Nm of torque, sprinting from 0-100kph in 5.2 seconds and an electronically-governed top speed of 255kph. Not as fast as the Arteon R but with that kind of performance numbers, the 508 PSE is a French high-performance super saloon that wants to equate with Germany's finest. As for fuel efficiency, it's a surprising 2L/100km on the WLTP scale. That's 50kmpl if you do the math.

Driving on electric power only, it has a range of 42km, and like most PHEVs, the 508 PSE's batteries can be charged but, depending on which charging point you're on, it will take almost half a day to recharge its batteries that supplement the two electric motors.

Because it has two electric motors on both sides, the 508 PSE is a four-wheel-drive vehicle, making it suitable for a chilling trip to Val Thorens on a holiday without making a ruckus. Aside from that, the 508 PSE, thanks to Peugeot's motorsports know-how, features sport-tuned dynamics underneath, making it capable of toying around the corners of Paul Ricard like it's its first try, although the digital engine sound mapping idea is cheesy, by the way.

You can play with it all day while trying to embarrass every Asian-made midsized executive car in its size, wishing that one day, they'll be as cool as this lion, but this is the real world, and although the sporty dynamics can upset a Regular Joe driving on normal day-to-day traffic, the 508 PSE features a wide range of ADAS just like the normal 508, and such safety features are worth noticeable.

The dismal charging times and the safety features not friendly to speedo boys behind the wheel are the downsides of the 508 PSE, but with the performance and styling that made a big impression, the 508 PSE is the high-performance Peugeot saloon they have been waiting for and looks like the Germans are on heightened alert.

So, what's it all about the new design? Well, truth be told, the new model is nothing more of a miniaturized S-Class for whatever reason, meaning the Russian doll effect is pretty much the new normal like most luxury carmakers these days. When parked alongside its big brothers, it's hard to distinguish which is which but anyway, it's the sizing that counts, not the way it looks.

The same story goes to the new interior because like the new S-Class, the new C-Class dons the Tesla-like large touch screen that scares speedo boys straight because there are no buttons on this screen of course. To add more salt to the speedo boys' wounds, the new C-Class is fitted with the MBUX user interface including the Alexa-ish "Hey Mercedes" voice function that allows almost anyone to speak with this car much to the annoyance of anyone in the sweet spot. 

Of course, while most of its new tech features are fun to play but easy to get bored with, what about the spacing? As Mercedes insists, the new C-Class is surprisingly roomier than the previous model, meaning VIPs from all walks of life are going to have a word about it on the boardroom. In the Estate variant, it's now 30 liters larger than the previous model, giving everyone more space for some goods to carry or deliver, whichever they'll come across. With more loads of room to spare, the new C-Class really is business in motion.

What about performance? The new C-Class features a wide roster of fuel-efficient and high-performance 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines offered and they're all mated to a 9G-TRONIC gearbox. They also carry an integrated starter-generator with a 48v onboard electrical system for a slight bump on fuel efficiency because, in the new normal, efficiency is king and it's here to stay.

The most powerful variant at launch is the C300 with the 279PS 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that propels from 0 to 100kph in six seconds and a limited top speed of 250kph.

On the dynamics side, the new C-Class drives better than the previous model thanks to its improved suspension setup and rear-axle steering. Not only it's more dynamic on the open road than the old model but it's also quieter and more civilized than ever before, giving the competition more reasons to explain what went wrong and with the 4MATIC drive system present, the new C-Class is a no-nonsense all-rounder that loves to be taken seriously, almost.

Because the new C-Class adapts to the new normal, expect plenty of safety features that will terrify speedo boys behind the wheel such as intelligent parking systems, driving assistance systems, DIGITAL LIGHT, and other high-tech safety features added or to be added in the new model.

Call it a mini-S-Class for all the wrong barrels, call it witchcraft because of its tech overload, call it what you may, but in terms of quality and overall satisfaction, the new C-Class is all business and pleasure in every way. It really is the luxury car that can truly adapt to the new normal and although speedo boys don't like it because of its monstrous list of tech implemented as well as the massive touch screen on the dashboard, the civilized and the privileged are more than happy to be obliged with the new C-Class. It's avantgarde done right.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

Speedo boys got blown away by the arrival of the first-ever Porsche Taycan, an all-electric premium sports sedan that is proof that Porsche laid their strongest card ever on the electric car wars thanks to its performance and ecology that puts its nemesis, the Tesla Model S, on its crosshairs. Thanks to the success of the Taycan, a new addition to the lineup has been welcomed, and looks like we're gonna need some extra space with this one.


The Porsche Taycan is now joined by the Cross Turismo variant, a so-called sport utility wagon that offers the same thrills as the sedan variant but now with the ruggedness to do some dirty stuff, come tarmac, gravel, or snow.

Known as the production version of the Mission E Cross Turismo Concept, just like its sedan counterpart that bears resemblance to the Mission E Concept, the concept-turned-reality styling of the Taycan Cross Turismo is a rewarding treat for speedo boys who can't wait to have one if they have a hundred pounds worth of hundred euro bills because of the pricing that starts at around 93,635 Euros plus additional costs. That's about ten grand more than its sedan equivalent but what do you get for that kind of money?

What you get is a Taycan with some extra space at the back and while it works and feels just like the sedan version, especially the futuristic dashboard that is packed with touchscreens all over and seating for five people on board, but since this is the crossover shooting brake version, the added boot space makes it suitable enough for your next weekend outing. With the rear seats present, boot space is about 446 litres, which is more than the sedan version but with them folded down, that makes it up to 1,212 litres, making the ideal business partner if you are into delivering sensitive packages to high-profile clients.

The Taycan Cross Turismo has four variants to choose from at the start and they are packed with the Performance Battery Plus with a total capacity of 93.4kWh and a system voltage of 800 volts for quicker charging times. The most powerful version, the Turbo S, has 460kW of power output but when overboost kicked in, it generates up to 560kw of kW of power, delivering a 0-100kph time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 250kph, slower than its sedan equivalent. Range? It's up to 419km per WLTP standards.

Porsche says that the Cross Turismo is almost capable of doing offroad stuff thanks to its raised ground clearance like most crossovers had but since this is a soft offroader, the only surfaces it can tackle are tarmac, gravel, and snow, even sand. Probably because with the Cross Turismo, there's an additional Gravel mode that allows the Cross Turismo to traverse through the dirt like a decent rally car but with some added sensibility.

When you had enough fun doing the rounds on the dirt, you can enjoy the Cross Turismo the same way you did in the sedan version of the Taycan and although it feels bulky to drive as the saloon equivalent, it's still worth satisfying to drive until you are fully satisfied and thanks to a wide range of driving aids, it's safer as well.

So, would you want this over the sedan version? It's hard to say but if you are thinking you need a Taycan that can deserve more, consider this.

Cupra Leon

Having nearly satisfied with their works such as the Cupra Ateca, and the Cupra original vehicle, the Formentor coupe-crossover, it's about time Cupra made a hot hatch by taking the fourth-generation Seat Leon as their base for their latest masterpiece, the Cupra Leon, and by the looks and feels of it, this could be the Cupra car speedo boys are waiting for, well almost.

The first-ever Cupra Leon range follows the footsteps of the previous Seat Leon Cupra and by turning the fourth-generation Seat Leon into a Cupra-fied hot hatch, this is what the Cupra fans are demanding since the beginning of the Cupra brand. It's available in either a five-door hatchback, priced at 40,480 Euros plus additional costs, and the more spacious Sportstourer, priced at 41,080 Euros plus additional costs.

Those who are familiar with the fourth-generation Leon should have no problem about how they worked. The Tarraco-styled nose, stylish side view, rear lamps that look like it came from the Kia Sportage, minimalist interior that spells utter nonsense for speedo boys behind the wheel, seating for five people, more boot space for the Sportstourer, and wide array of ADAS such as DCC, ACC, Emergency Assist, Travel Assist, Side and Exit assist, and more. 

Yes, it's those familiar stuff that kept us familiarized with the fourth-generation Leon but since this is the Cupra Leon, the differences are all over. From its Cupra logo, wheels, and interior accents finished in its copper glory, beefed up exterior design, additional drive modes on the sat-nav for when you need it, and pretty much anything to differentiate it from the normal Seat Leon.

At the start, the Cupra Leon range features a modest e-Hybrid powertrain which combines the 150PS, 250Nm 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and a 85kW electric motor with 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack, making it capable of producing a total output of around 245PS of peak power and 400Nm of torque. That's about more power than a Toyota Altezza RS200 and by a long shot but now's not the time for comparison because with this PHEV powetrain mated to a DSG, it does 6.7 seconds and onwards to 225kph. That's modest performance for an eco car as well as its fuel efficiency which returns to about 1.4 l/100km on the combined WLTP scale.

The PHEV variant sounds nice but those who are demanding for the ultimate hot hatch should wait later this 2021 for the 2.0L TSi engine which produces 300PS of power (10PS more on Sportstourer 4Drive variant) and with the DSG mated, it can get out at 100kph in 5.7 seconds and electronically limited to 250kph.

Of course, being the Spanish answer to the Golf GTi, the Cupra Leon is as close to the hot hatch poster boy as you can get thanks to its enhanced chassis setup, the DCC, front MacPherson struts and rear multilink setup on the suspension, and Brembo brakes. For a front-wheel drive hot hatch, the Cupra Leon is as breathable to drive as breathable underwear you bought at the mall and then soiled by the time you had a blast with this Spanish GTi.

With the choice of a e-Hybrid and 2.0L TSi with over 300PS of power, not to mention the reworked dynamics that makes it hot hatch material, the Cupra Leon is the Cupra fans are waiting for, almost. Will you have one rather than Cupra's crossover siblings?
