Let's Do The News! (August 18, 2016)


- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is ready to deal with China but within in the context of the decision of a UN-backed tribunal awarding sovereign rights to the Philippines in the South China Sea dispute. Duterte made the statement after he was asked if he would be bringing up the issue during his ASEAN visit within a couple of weeks.

- Senator Leila de Lima delivered her response to Duterte's tirades against her. In her statement, De Lima said the president's move is an abuse and misuse of his executive power. She called on Duterte to stop portraying her as the enemy. The full text can be read here.

- Malacanang officials released the list of official nationwide holidays for 2017. Check it out.

- In another round of Donald Trump's provocations in the race to the White House, the Republican Presidentiable just revamped his campaign with naming Breitbart executive Steve Bannon as his campaign CEO and promoted pollster Kellyanne Conway as campaign manager. With the newly revised campaign all set, Trump is set to win back votes against his rival, Democratic Presidentiable Hillary Clinton, who's facing another conspiracy theory about her health conditions as well as the FBI sending their recorded interview of Clinton herself to the Republican-controlled Congress.

- Turkey will free some 38,000 prisoners who were detained following last month's failed coup plot. Local media report this may be to make space for people authorities detain in connection with the revolt. Those convicted of murder, terrorism, sexual abuse, and other crimes will be excluded.

- Two Team USA swimming champions are banned from leaving Brazil as authorities investigate their claim that they were robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro. The court on Wednesday ordered Ryan Lochte and his teammate to stay, but Lochte has already returned to the USA. He and his 3 teammates claim they were robbed on early Sunday morning as they made their way to the athletes' village in a taxi. But police have reportedly found inconsistencies in testimonies given by Lochte and another swimmer.

- A new gameplay footage for next year's BIOHAZARD 7 resident evil (Resident Evil VII biohazard) was showcased on this year's Gamescom. Check it out if you dare...



- The Metal Gear franchise will survive as gearing up for its 30th anniversary next year, Konami showcased a teaser trailer for the new survival co-op game Metal Gear Survive. It will be the first full MG game since series creator Hideo Kojima left Konami. Coming on the PS4/XBOX One/PC next year, in time for Metal Gear's 30th anniversary, this game is set after the end of Ground Zeroes where the remaining Mother Base survivors are warped to a mysterious universe and they're fighting their way to survive.
