- The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that the number of families affected by Typhoon Ompong are now at over 264,000.

- US Secretary of Defense James Mattis welcomed National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana to the Pentagon. “Both our defense establishments agree that the Philippines-US alliance remains robust, based on an enduring history of close engagement and our unwavering commitment to work together on shared values,” Lorenzana said in a short video of the meeting released by the U.S. Department of Defense.

- A business group led by Spanish-Filipino billionaire Enrique Razon sets take over of the Panay Electric Company Inc. in the Visayas. Razon’s group and the Monte Oro Resources & Energy Inc. of businessman Walter Brown are in the running for the PECO acquisition – reinforced by a proposed Congressional franchise that already passed plenary deliberations in the House of Representatives.

- The Catholic Church in New York has reached a $27.5 million settlement with four men who said they were sexually abused as children. The Diocese of Brooklyn, one of the city’s boroughs, agreed to make the payments to the four, who were sexually abused between 2003 and 2009 by their religion teacher, their lawyers said.

- European leaders will gather for a summit to put summer tensions over migration behind them and set up the last stretch of talks for a Brexit deal. The European Union’s top officials face intense pressure in the coming weeks to seal a divorce deal and a plan for future ties with Britain to avert a chaotic exit in March.

- A series of devastating suicide attacks on Afghanistan’s minority Shiite community has fuelled fears of more violence ahead of Ashura, one of the Muslim sect’s holiest days, and prompted calls for civilians to arm themselves.

- Tesla confirmed that the US Justice Department were looking into possible criminal aspects of a seemingly spontaneous, and later aborted, announcement by chief executive Elon Musk on taking the electric automaker private.

- The Mercedes-AMG A35 was unveiled, serving as the entry-level model to the AMG line. The high-performance variant is powered by a new M260 2.0L four-cylinder twin-scroll turbo petrol engine producing 306hp of power and 400Nm. Armed with a AMG Performance 4Matic and recalibrated automatic gearbox with Race-Start function, it does 0-100kph in 4.7 seconds.
